TALK AM WELL

Talk Am Well is a digital collage series that transforms the vibrant oral traditions of Nigerian proverbs, idioms, and colloquialisms into bold visual compositions. Using the intricate patterns of everyday mats as a foundation, the series reimagines these cultural expressions as layered collages that evoke humor, wisdom, and introspection. Through the fusion of these sayings with contemporary artistic forms, the work amplifes the depth and accessibility of Pidgin English as a lingua franca, bridging ethnic groups and providing a unifying medium across Nigeria’s diverse population.

The series draws inspiration from initiatives like the BBC’s Pidgin English news service, which has broadened access to information by embracing a language spoken by millions but historically sidelined. Similarly, Talk Am Well elevates Pidgin English by intertwining its cultural expressions with visual artistry, transforming everyday sayings into works that celebrate the language’s inclusivity and its deep connection to indigenous linguistic roots.

The mats’ patterns are transformed into visual frameworks, juxtaposing text and design to create a unique visual language that explores themes of identity, community, and heritage. By combining traditional proverbs with modern design, the series reflects the enduring power of storytelling as an ancient form of technology—a medium that has long been humanity’s tool for preserving history, solving problems, and fostering connection. At its core, Talk Am Well underscores the timeless relevance of oral traditions in shaping collective identity. These communal activities, centered on shared narratives and cultural expression, offer pathways to mending the fractures within modern society, reminding us of the potential for unity and understanding in a fragmented world
