ENSHROUD: The Veil as Identity, Resistance & Art
Lagos, Nigeria 2018

Wrap My Hijabi is a photographic series exploring the veil as an evolving symbol of identity, resistance, and self-expression. Building on the themes of Medina’s Enshroud series, this continuation is inspired by the lyrics of Syrian-American artist Mona Haydar, whose anthem “Hijabi” celebrates the strength and individuality of veiled women while defying stereotypes.
The series delves into the intersections of faith, culture, and style, framing the hijab as a personal and political act of empowerment. Wrap My Hijabi highlights the artistry and boldness of women who wear the veil unapologetically, weaving narratives of tradition, beauty, and autonomy. The photographs echo Haydar’s declaration, “You can’t take my voice,” presenting the hijab not as a barrier but as a medium for storytelling and connection.
Set against the textured backdrops of prayer mats common in Nigeria, the series embraces themes of motion and stillness, individuality and unity. The women in Wrap My Hijabi exude confidence, their veils transforming into fluid extensions of their spirit —at once practical, artistic, and sacred. Each image challenges viewers to move beyond reductionist narratives, celebrating the hijab as a symbol of both personal choice and collective identity. The veil becomes more than fabric —it is an affirmation, a song, and a movement. This series offers an homage to the multiplicity of veiled identities and a call to reimagine the ways we perceive freedom, culture, and individuality.
